A SEA OF BLACK FACES

We witness a sea of black faces
at the entrance to the old city's dome
Katrina brought a merciless attack
a storm like no other they've known

The poor, much too poor to leave
helpless without means of escape
Ancestors also met their tragic demise
when they too, faced an untimely fate

Where were the trains and buses
or the planes to move safely out?
Warning enough for mass exodus
no authority ensured a safe route!

Some found safety from Katrina
those with money and cars to do
The elderly poor left behind to die
in a sea of black faces that grew

Corpses now rotting in the water
alligators and snakes swim away
Disease, a nightmare unleashed
in that water so filthy and grey

Homes destroyed and lives torn
nightmares of devastation and grief
Thousands die in a watery tomb
no rescue for these lives so brief

Billions spent on murderous wars!
but no safety for this vulnerable place
In advance authorities knew the risks
this tragedy's a government disgrace

New Orleans drowns in silence
the old city floats quietly away
Few steal water and food to survive
though troops keep looters at bay

A desperate attempt to stay alive
clinging to where hope once stood
Soaring mercury and empty promises
the inevitable now well understood

No shelter or shade from the sun
for a sea of black faces we know
Only hope and the power of prayer
for the poor who've no place to go

Shrouded now in gloom and fear
their silence bears a dying cry
Some will live to see another day
but thousands will surely die

God help the stranded people
it is through no fault of their own
On rooftops and roadways they fade
in a sea of black faces that's grown.

Note: Attn: Mr President

You cannot blame this one on terrorists!
The results of this catastrophe fall squarely
on your shoulders.
Your funding cuts killed thousands.

Now it's too little too late. You knew the risks
the vulnerable poor of New Orleans would face.
Even on dry land you let them die in the sun.

Homeland security!
I hope the citizenry of the USA questions
the effectiveness of disaster preparedness.
It would seem it doesn't exist, at least not
for the poor. Shame on you and all levels
of government who willingly gambled away
the lives of thousands of innocent people..
