THE JOURNALIST'S ORDEAL

(In memory of Nicola Calipari - Italy)

A journalist held captive for weeks
was released, fortunately unharmed
Yet as she was driven to safety
it's then they appeared fully armed

In ambush many shots rang out
their intent seemingly to kill
But excuses, now used to justify
the orders they'd been told to fulfil

The double face of warmongers
for democracy they claim to fight
An innocent woman returning home
crossed paths with the reaper that night

A security officer lay dead at her side
the same who'd negotiated release
Did friendly forces open fire in error
or does murder side-step peace?

We're thankful Giuliana's safe
and await the story she'll tell
A nightmare to be targeted by "friends"
the grim reapers from an ungodly hell

To Nicola's widow and family
we send prayers of comfort your way
Great courage shown by one man alone
his conscience he could never betray!.
